Mitchel Metalworx: Skull ‘n CrossbonesSpeaking of recycled bikes turned into art….

Mitchell Metalworx is a fantastic site I Stumbled across this morning. The artist, Steve Mitchell, works exclusively with recycled bike parts, turning them into some truly unique art sculptures. His work is appealing to both men and women, youth and adults.

Mitchel Metalworx: Bike BotHis bike bots are my favorites. They remind of the creatures from Alien–metal and organic at the same time, but much friendlier, of course! As you can see from the artist’s website, they are built to be life-size. Try running into that guy in the middle of the night on the way to the bathroom!

Care to show a little world pride? Try a 3-dimensional wall sculpture of the World Map made from chain rings. Or perhaps your tastes are more modern? The Rotor Tower, made from disc brake rotors, should make you quite happy.

The variety of work he can render from old, grimey bike parts is amazing. His trademark ‘clean weld’ makes the sculptures look as if they were “born” in these artful configurations. I’m sure that the finishes on these pieces took quite a bit of labor on his part. How many hours of sanding and polishing do you think he put in?

While not a biking enthusiast myself, I can appreciate the work and artisty put into each of these pieces. I’m glad that he took it upon himself to do something about the leftovers of the bicycling industry in such a creative way. A great contribution to the world of recycled art!
